The Alchemist Cafe - Hong Kong International Airport

From Tram Green to Terminal Glow: Reviving Hong Kong Stories at HKIA

Located within the vast, metallic expanse of Hong Kong International Airport, The Alchemist Café and Diner serves as a 3,358-square-foot oasis of “HK Tram Green” (Pantone 3415 C). This evocative hue—a nod to the city’s post-war resourcefulness—drenches the space, offering a nostalgic, cinematic contrast to the sterile hum of global travel. To ground the towering airport ceilings, the design introduces a bamboo-scaffold-inspired pavilion and retro signage that glows with the warmth of mid-century televisions. Every corner is a curated collision of local heritage and modern wit, from “money flower” floor patterns interwoven with tiger tattoo motifs to “wet market” lighting features that transform mundane urban artifacts into sculptural statements.

The interior thrives on high-contrast collaborations, featuring golden dragon mirror motifs by Hop Keung set against abstract, ethereal murals by Eunis Cheong. Traditional elements like terrazzo counters, patterned tiles, and metal grilles are reimagined through a monochrome green lens, creating a tactile depth that feels both avant-garde and deeply familiar. Functionally, the layout mirrors the rhythm of the terminal, offering flexible zones that transition from efficient quick-service counters to leisurely alcoves for the weary traveler. More than a rest stop, it is a piece of cultural alchemy—a resilient, vividly green tribute to the soul of Hong Kong that offers travelers a moment of profound, localized belonging before they take to the skies.
